Abstract: |
The project comprised two elements. The first was GIS-mapping of the extent of past and current china-clay exploitation in Cornwall and Devon, based on historic and current mapping and NMP air photograph data, identifying extraction, tipping and infrastructure. These data were combined with British Geological Survey data on the spatial extent of kaolin resources and the boundary established for the St Austell, St Blazey and China-Clay Area Regeneration Plan to create a project area. HER data was used to generate datasets of heritage assets likely to have been damaged or destroyed by past china-clay industry activity, and those potentially at risk. Grey literature was used to enhance the HER material. The project report includes the following: For each Historic Landscape Character Type in the project area, assessments of character, archaeological potential, potential impact of future development, possible mitigation and statement of significance. Analyses of the impact of china-clay working on the historic environment; discussion of the potential impact of future working and re-working of waste. Examination of HER datasets concludes that these are not adequate for secure assessment of past impact and future risk. A review of mitigation, including appropriate means to record and conserve heritage assets of the modern china-clay industry. Discussion of HLC in assessing past loss and future risk to the historic environment. In the absence of comprehensive data on heritage assets, HLC offers a good basis for mitigation. Recommendations, including work to identify characteristic and significant elements of the modern industry. |
