Abstract:
Archaeological watching brief along length of new cycle path on the southern side of Barrowfields, Newquay. This did not lead to the discovery of any major archaeological features. A pit [5] was uncovered, but nature was uncertain, it most likely being modern in date and possibly a geotechnical trial pit. Two definite modern geotechnical trenches were also recorded, pits [7] and [9]. A section through the ridge and furrow of the field system (MCO 20542) on the western half of the site was recorded. It is generally thought to be medieval in date, the archaeological assessment of the area suggesting that Barrowfields was associated with a farm holding, or holdings, centred at Tretherras. Tretherras was established in the early medieval period. It is possible, however, that these cultivation ridges may be the consequence of land improvement undertaken in this area in the 1820s, as this process involved the levelling and removal of the majority the barrow mounds in this area. The ridging could be the result of an initial turning over of the ground intended for further improvement, but subsequently allowed to revert to pasture. Unfortunately, no direct dating evidence was obtained for the ridge and furrow field system. No other features of archaeological interest were uncovered along the route of the cycle path, and no artefacts were recovered. It is therefore evident that this development has made little impact on any significant buried archaeological remains. Given the extensive evidence for prehistoric activity elsewhere within this field it is, however, recommended that any further developments involving ground disturbance in the future should be subject to archaeological recording and monitoring.
