Abstract:
This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation and historic visual impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at Polharmon Farm, Tywardreath, Cornwall, in advance of the construction of a single 900kW (77m to tip) wind turbine. The proposed turbine would be installed on land that originally belonged to the farm at Carruggatt, and perhaps originally part of the possessions of Tywardreath Priory. Historically, the field formed part of Carruggatt Wood, and was only cleared in the later 20th century. The field immediately to the north of Polharmon Farm contains the cropmarks of a Prehistoric or Romano-British enclosure, trackway and possible roundhouse. The geophysical survey undertaken identified a series of linear anomalies along the line of the access track, and another possible roundhouse. In terms of the wider landscape, the site is located towards the end of a hill spur, with the land falling away into a wide valley to the south-east and south. This is a diverse historical and cultural landscape containing two important registered battlefields (Lostwithiel) and part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site (Luxulyan Valley). The WHS lies to the west, mostly within a deep wooded valley, but includes the remaining engine house of Fowey Consols Mine, located less than 1km from the site of the proposed turbine.
