Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to undertake a detailed gradiometer survey over land off Trevemper Road, Newquay, Cornwall ahead of a proposed development. The site comprises seven pasture fields to the south of Newquay. The survey has demonstrated the presence of anomalies of probable and of possible archaeological interest, along with regions of increased magnetic response. Several linear anomalies of probable archaeological interest were identified towards the western and eastern extents of the survey area, which are likely to indicate the presence of former field systems. These former boundaries are on similar orientations to existing boundaries, perhaps suggesting they are historic in origin and therefore of more limited archaeological interest. Other linear anomalies consistent with former field systems have been identified elsewhere, although they are less well defined and consequently considered to be of possible archaeological interest. A number of large pit-like responses have been noted within the western and southeastern fields. It is unclear whether they are archaeological in origin, as it is possible that natural or geological features could produce similar anomalies. Several regions of increased response have been identified, with occasional anomalies located within them. Numerous linear trends are apparent throughout the site, some of which are consistent with ploughing or drainage. Broad responses consistent with geological changes were identified near the northeastern survey extents. The dataset from the southwesternmost field shows strong magnetic disturbance, consistent with the dumping of modern debris or perhaps landfill. Two modern services were identified within the survey data.
