Turtle remains from a late 18th century well at Leadenhall Buildings

The finding of a group of turtle bones (Chelonia mydas L) prompted an investigation of the late 18th and 19th century trade in the commodity which, as turtle soup, sustained so many City aldermen at their banquets. The main source was the West Indies; with the advent of canning turtle soup moved down the social scale. Live weight of the London specimen would have been 60lb, 27kg.

The earliest dated spectacles in Europe came from a mid-15th century deposit in Blackfriars; they are made in two halves cut from a bone plate, with an iron rivet at the joint, and have several interesting features.
