Mesolithic and neolithic fint tool-manufacturing areas buried beneath Roman Watling Street in Southwark
Wendy Rogers
227 - 231
Four trenches produced evidence of extensive prehistoric activity beneath a newly uncovered stretch of Roman road. However, there were neither Bronze Age nor Iron Age deposits.
The discovery of London's amphitheatre: excavations at the Old Art Gallery site 1987-88 and 1990
Nick Bateman
232 - 241
Roman deposits from different areas of the site were found to form a second to fourth century AD amphitheatre built on the site of a similar first century AD timber structure.
Wetland use in Rainham, Essex
Frank M Meddens
Mark Beasley
242 - 248
Four phases of occupation are detailed. The first three include evidence of early but undatable stake holes associated with a large trench, stakelines and fire cracked pebbles, peat formation corresponding with a brushwood trackway and a series of stakelines with wattling. Phase four was characterised by a large shallow rubbish pit, including Late Iron Age and Early Roman pottery and faunal remains, the location of which would suggest a Roman occupation site under present day Rainham.
