The assembledges from Colchester House, St John's Square and Limehouse Link, represent three different sociological and economic environments allowing a balanced study. The porcelain is fairly typical of the ware made at Jingdezhen and exported to Europe during the Qing dynasty between 1700-80.

The excavation was conducted in advance of a housing development. After an evaluation only one trench, c26m by 8m, was excavated and the remainder of the plot was subject to a watching brief. Although there is documentary evidence of the Romano British and Saxon settlement, the archaeological sequence represents the early medieval settlement through to the present.
