Prehistoric finds at Hopton Street in Southwark
Victoria Ridgeway
Jonathan Butler
72 - 76
Report on evidence for prehistoric occupation uncovered during archaeological work at 47--67 Hopton Street, Southwark. A finds assemblage comprising substantial amounts of worked lithics and burnt flint, as well as pot sherds, bone fragments, daub and a red compound (thought to be dye) suggested a Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date, with a smaller Mesolithic to Early Neolithic component. A small pit containing a complete beaker bowl of Late Neolithic date was found in association with a flint core and blade, and linear grooves were interpreted as ard or plough marks.

Finds included the spout, in the form of an animal head, of a late medieval lavabo.

Julian M C Bowsher
82 - 89
Report on an extensive watching brief carried out in 1996 at the site of Globe House, Temple Place, which revealed a sequence of fluvial deposits that provided much information on the topography of the area, as well as artefactual evidence from the Roman to medieval periods, including Saxon material.
