1600 years of the City defences at Aldersgate

Interim report on an evaluation and excavation at 1--6 Aldersgate Street, City of London, during 1997--8 in an area that included the city wall bastion, the Roman, medieval and post-medieval city wall, and the Roman, medieval and post-medieval city gate of Aldersgate. Investigations revealed a complex history of the City's defences from early Roman times through to the seventeenth century.

The article reviews the archaeological evidence for prehistoric activity in the area of Twickenham, and of Ham Fields on the Surrey side of the River Thames, and incorporates the unpublished results of a number of investigations undertaken during the 1990s. The topography and geology are described, and evidence is presented in chronological sequence from the Palaeolithic period to the Iron Age.

Evidence was revealed of activity dating from the Neolithic period through to the Late Bronze Age, including fragments of a bucket-shaped pottery vessel of Deverel-Rimbury type dating to the Middle Bronze Age, recovered from the base of a clay-lined pit.
