In late 1996 and early 1997 excavations revealed a possible property boundary running east/west across the site at a right angle to North Street. The association of this feature with low-status domestic occupation and its location 280m north-east of the probable precinct of the medieval abbey may indicate the presence of a secular settlement contemporary with the AS abbey.
