Saxons in Deptford
Marit Gaimster
31 - 37
Article on the discovery and excavation of two Anglo-Saxon inhumation burials at a site behind the Dover Castle public house on the northern side of Deptford Broadway. One burial was furnished with grave goods including a decorated gilt-bronze pendant and fittings from a small wooden casket, and could be dated to the seventh century. The author discusses the context of Anglo-Saxon Deptford, and of preceding settlement relating to the Roman period.

A medieval dock at Waltham Abbey, and a consideration of medieval measurements
Peter J Huggins
47 - 51
Article on a timber-framed and planked dock found during excavations across an ancient waterway called Longpool at Waltham Abbey from 1996 to 1998. Following a description of the remains of the dock and its phases of use, the author discusses the measurements used in the dock's construction -- in particular the medieval rod or perch -- and the documentary and archaeological evidence for their use generally.
