There is a separately authored `Report on the cremated skeletal material' by Joy Langston (48).

Reports survey on a site held to be a barrow but recently suggested, on morphological grounds, to represent a Roman signal or watch tower instead. It is thought that the survey evidence upholds the former interpretation, although there is the possibility of later, Roman, re-use of the site.

Historical/biographical account of the masters of the largest and best documented site of this type in the area, up to the early-fourteenth century.

Presents documentary evidence on the construction of the civic building, including an appendix `Transcription of Richard Dudley's 1571 copper account' (132--3).

Historical records of weavers and spinners, whose numbers do not always tally with the number of wheels etc recorded, casting doubt on the often assumed equation between the number of workers in an industry and the volume of machinery.

Brief note on work that did not discover any strong indication of prehistoric activity.

Hoards, `other collections', and casual finds are noted.
