TL 2571. Two areas, A and B, were examined. A yielded remains of a large rectangular building, possibly a bath-house. Mosaics, painted plaster, and pottery largely of late 4th cent were found. The contents and stratification of the complex in area B, 150ft N of A, suggests the presence of a large wooden-framed building abandoned in mid-2nd cent. More extensive examination will be necessary to explain the presence of painted plaster above a possible forging-hearth of 2nd cent. Post-holes and other evidence indicate that at the E end of the complex a wooden-framed dwelling was occupied from late 2nd or early 3rd cent and abandoned before late 4th cent. Metal objects, pottery and miscellaneous finds are catalogued. AT

52/733833. Examination of the type was prompted by the discovery after ploughing of the Lakenheath example, of reversed S-shape with bird's head terminals. The nearest parallels are seen in a pair from the Sleaford cemetery. Although its distribution in Europe is wide, the type is not common in the British Isles and it occurs only in the early settlement areas of SE England. The more elaborate examples here are of Continental (mostly Frankish) origin, but others appear to be locally made. In both groups the direction of the S is variable and the terminals can be of bird-of-prey or duck. A swastika brooch with bird-of-prey terminals from Mildenhall (Suffolk) and the Lakenheath S-brooch may be products of one workshop. The S-shape is a common Anglo-Saxon decorative motif, but the double-headed form of the brooches seems to derive partly from the Celtic dragonesque brooch tradition. Dating evidence is poor but a late 5th-early 6th cent span is indicated.
