Abstract: |
Continuing watching briefs on renovation works at Chawton House did not reveal any archaeological features. A rare medieval tile was recovered from dumped soils alongside an outbuildings, thought to have once paved part of the manorial complex of the St John family or its adjoining church. The manor had been much frequented by Henry III and his son, Edward I as a stopping off point between the royal palaces at Guildford and Winchester. This particular design, St Cuthbert's Cross, was normally only found at sites of exceptional status and it was possible that the tile has some royal connection. Removal of floorboards in the SW and SE rooms of the main house allowed an examination of the south cellar wall, now believed to be medieval. A backfilled void may have been the result of the foreshortening of an earlier cellar arrangement. This hypothesis was supported by the discovery of an underground compartment containing what may have been a set of exterior steps leading into the cellars in the SW room of the house. These steps seemed to have been made as part of the late Elizabethan work. [Au(abr)] |
