Abstract: |
Evaluation in response to proposals for a reservoir extension revealed the presence of five Iron Age sites as well as more recent features that appeared to be associated with the early development of the extant field pattern. The Iron Age sites were thought to be the remains of enclosed and unenclosed farmsteads. They differed in age and location and suggested an expanding and shifting pattern of settlement beginning in the early Iron Age and carrying on until the late 1st-early 2nd century AD. The most notable site was late Iron Age and comprised a number of round houses as well as a D-shaped enclosure. Some of the late Iron Age ditches contained evidence for domestic settlement, such as loom weights and charcoal. A newly discovered trackway was potentially significant, implying that the field system recorded at the site may have been medieval in origin. Post-medieval field ditches and trackways lay dispersed across the development area. [Au(adp)] |
