Abstract:
A geophysical survey and an archaeological evaluation was carried out on 0.2 ha of land within a previous walled garden proposed for a sports hall at Quinton House School, Upton. The survey revealed a sub-rectangular ditched enclosure, ditches, a possible pit alignment and numerous other pits. The evaluation confirmed the location of the enclosure, together with internal features including pits, post holes and gullies, containing Iron Age pottery. A series of ditches to the north west of the enclosure were observed along with a pit associated with the alignment. Further post holes and ditches were revealed outside of the enclosure. Iron Age pottery and animal bones were found. At the south end of the site a medieval enclosure ditch which might have represented the north eastern end of the deserted medieval village was also revealed. Medieval pottery and animal bone fragments were found. Two musket balls and a cast iron fruit tree identity tag were found from the topsoil. [Au(adp)]
