Abstract:
The principal discovery of the excavation was an enclosure, probably a farmstead, established in the late Iron Age and enlarged by the addition of an outer ditch in the 1st-2nd century AD. The farmstead was cut by a ditch on a different alignment in the 2nd century AD, probably indicating abandonment of the settlement and the introduction of agricultural or pastoral farming. Other ditches suggested further subdivisions of the landscape. Finds other than pottery were not plentiful, but the presence of loom weights, briquetage and structural clay demonstrated a domestic settlement based on an agricultural economy. A few pits and post holes were the only features to survive heavy plough damage. [Au(adp)]
