Abstract: |
A geophysical (magnetometer) survey, covering approximately 142 hectares, was carried out in fields to the south of Beckermet and north of Sellafield Nuclear Reprocessing site. This is in advance of the proposed development of the site. Anomalies indicative of recent and former agricultural practice were identified. The geology of the area has been recorded, especially where the topography of the land dramatically changes, and the topsoil thinner. This is clear to the west of the survey limits. To the south of the survey area, archaeological activity has been recorded. To the north, and the outlying parcels of land, no archaeological evidence has been detected. Therefore the archaeological potential of the site is medium around the area of Watch Hill, and low across the rest of the site. |
