Abstract:
This project consists of an investigation of the potential for archaeological remains to survive on land at Greyfriars Church, Reading, Berkshire (NGR SU 7123 7359), for which there is a proposal to re-develop. The area has seen activity from the prehistoric period to the modern day. It would seem that Palaeolithic finds and later prehistoric and Roman activity has been reported from along the northern edge of the river terrace a this point. Early medieval activity has been recognised to the southeast along the site, in the vicinity of Saint Mary's church. The site lay on the edge of the 12th century expansion of the town and in the later part of the 13th century became the location of the Friary. This was dissolved in the 16th century, when the buildings were re-assigned as structures for civil government and then penal reform. In the Victorian period the site was reworked with the re-establishment of a church and school. The school was constructed on the location of the current development site. The development of the hall saw the terracing of the hillside, hence the area under the car-park has seen truncation, while at the north end of the hall may have been raised.
