Abstract:
Cornwall Archaeological Unit was commissioned by Kier Strategic Highways to produce a Cultural Heritage Asset Management Plan (CHAMP) for the 39.47 km long section of the A30 through Cornwall from Innis Downs near Bodmin to Dunheved Bridge near Launceston. A DBA was undertaken, GIS data for the roadline and sites within its viewshed in buffer zones out to 1km was collated, field visits made to sites in the road corridor and within the buffer zones, record photographs taken and condition and management reports for sites in the HA estate prepared. The impacts of the A30 on sites within its buffer zones were also considered. This section of the A30 follows a long-standing route across Bodmin Moor between Bodmin and Launceston. Much of it was improved by turnpike trusts between 1789 and 1836, whilst the majority of it was dualled between the 1970s and the 1990s, bypassing all of the settlements along the route. Several medieval wayside crosses survive along the route, together with some turnpike era milestones, a number of guideposts and two early bridges. Other features recorded along or near the roadline included a former coaching inn, a disused church, a cropmark prehistoric settlement, boundary stones and two barrows. The A30 influences the settings of several sites within the landscape through which it passes, both visually and audibly, most particularly in its moorland section. As well as a project report, data was also produced for incorporation into the Highways Agency EnvIS GIS-based management database.
