Abstract: |
A program of archaeological works, involving evaluation and historic building survey, was undertaken in response to a condition attached to planning permission granted for the construction of a supermarket and associated works. The evaluation involved nine trenches equating to 200 linear m, which revealed that beneath levelling and foundations associated with previous modern industrial activity, deposits of loam up to 2m in depth survive across the entire evaluated area; sealing alluvium of sand and gravel. Archaeologically significant features, assumed to be medieval on the basis of the recovered artefacts, including several pits and ditches were identified both below and within the loam deposits. These were concentrated towards the south of the site. Ditch remains in the most southerly trench (Trench 1) that cut into alluvial deposits may have earlier, Roman origins |
