Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology for Harold Tottle and Sons in August 2016 on works associated with the construction of 4 dwellings and associated works on land behind 78 Priory Bridge Road, Taunton, Somerset. The work was required by Taunton Deane Borough Council, as advised by the Somerset County Historic Environment Team. The site lies on the edge of the historic core of Taunton, within the precinct of the Augustinian Priory of St Peter and St Paul, and was undeveloped until the beginning of the 20th century. Although it was anticipated that the foundations of the proposed building would be relatively shallow, it was considered possible that archaeological features and/or deposits relating to the medieval Augustinian Priory of St Peter and St Paul might survive within the footprint of the development The base of the foundations revealed the top of alluvial deposits identified in 2009 at the ROAB Club and in 2016 on land behind 66-68 Priory Bridge Road. No features, deposits or dating evidence were found to indicate archaeological activity within the area of the development. |
