Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. on land at 134 Weston Street, London, SE1 4PZ, London Borough of Southwark. The evaluation was carried out on 20th March 2014 and was designed to observe and record the excavation of one single trench. The earliest deposit encountered during the archaeological evaluation was a firm yellowish brown coarse sand gravel. This natural gravel layer was cut by a large feature of unknown extent. This was interpreted as a Roman feature due to its location in the archaeological sequence and based on the results of similar investigations in the near vicinity of the site. The large cut feature was overlaid by a firm mid to dark brown sandy clay silt layer. One single abraded fragment of CBM retrieved from this layer was dated between AD 50 to 160. The possible Roman layer was overlaid by post-medieval made ground and cut by a possible 18th century property boundary/fence line. An 18th century ditch was also noted. The archaeological sequence was sealed at approximately 3m OD by modern made ground about 1.35m thick. |
