Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at Spital House Farm, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland. The site is situated at the southern boundary of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in south-east Northumberland on the north side of the B1334 road. The farmstead is located approximately 0.5km from the foreshore and is presently occupied by the buildings of Spital House Farm, and an area of open pasture to the north-east. A programme of archaeological trial trenching was recommended to establish whether significant archaeological remains survived within the development area and if so, in what specific locations. A total of 11 trenches were excavated to evaluate the archaeological potential of the site. Two 2m x 12.5m trenches were placed within the farmstead between areas of hardstanding and a further nine 2m x 25m trenches were situated in a field of open pasture located to the north-east of the farm. No deposits or features of archaeological significance were encountered during the evaluation.
