Abstract:
Geophysical survey was undertaken on 49 hectares of land northeast of Daventry, Northamptonshire. The survey area was magnetically scanned and detailed geophysical (fluxgate gradiometer) survey of 7.5 hectares was subsequently carried out to examine defined targets. The detailed survey defines the location of a small settlement, of probable late Iron Age or Romano-British date, which is located immediately northwest of Middlemoor Farm. Other magnetic anomalies indicate that cut and infilled features are present in the southeast of the survey area. Fieldwalking surveys were subsequently undertaken and a light scatter of worked flint was present across the site. A concentration that may indicate prehistoric activity is noted in the field southeast of the farm buildings. Four sherds of Romano-British pottery and two sherds of Medieval pottery were recovered. Very little archaeologically significant material was identified. Evaluation trenching was undertaken to investigate the ditches and pits identified by geophysical survey. The targeted geophysical anomalies proved to be ditches and pits containing 1st - 2nd and 3rd - 4th century Romano-British pot sherds. The pot sherds were unabraded, which may suggest that the ditches and pits are close to settlement activity. The dates of the pottery could indicate that this location saw continuity of use throughout much of the Romano-British period. Further anomalies proved to be ditches, penannular gullies and a pit containing Iron Age pot sherds. Two ditches appear to be stock enclosures. Other shallower penannular gullies probably define the locations of at least three roundhouses. Recovered pot sherds indicate that early / mid Iron Age settlement features are present.
