Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Epping Forest District Museum to undertake a programme of historic building recording focused upon internal historic structures within Nos 39 and 41 Sun Street, Waltham Abbey, Essex that will be removed during the refurbishment and extension of the museum. Both Nos 39 and 41 Sun Street are statutorily listed buildings. No. 39 is a Grade II listed building thought to date from the mid-18th century although dated to the 16th century in the listing description. No. 41 is a Grade II* listed timber-framed building, first built in the 16th century and remodelled in the 17th, 18th and late 19th centuries. The historic building recording was carried out at the request of the Anthony O'Connor, Museums, Heritage and Culture Manager of Epping Forest District Museum in connection with alterations made as part of Listed Building Consent (EPF/0239/13/LB) for 'internal alterations and change of use of first floor to provide additional storage, gallery space, community activity space and curatorial office space'. It was undertaken in accordance with guidance published in English Heritage (2006) Understanding Historic Buildings: A guide to good recording practice. The survey suggests that the floor structure recorded in No. 39 corresponds with the mid-18th century date suggested for the building's construction. However, parts of this floor structure were clearly re-used and may originate from an earlier 16th century building, possibly a predecessor to the mid-18th century house.
