Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to undertake a scheme of archaeological works at Lodge House, Smalley, Derbyshire. Three phases of fieldwork were performed. An initial evaluation, site code 84170, targeted geophysical anomalies. A 4.5m wide ditched enclosure of Romano-British date was discovered with pottery suggesting domestic settlement. An open area excavation, project code 84171, was undertaken which built upon the results of the evaluation, showing that the enclosure was 'D'-shaped although little in the way of structural remains was found. A medium-sized assemblage of pottery was recovered. The initial evaluation and open area excavation were published under site code 84172. A further evaluation of nearby land was undertaken, code 84173, but all geophysical anomalies translated into 19th/20th century features. |
