Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at 59, St Margaret's Street, Rochester, Kent. The work was undertaken between the 10th and 11th July 2008 on behalf of C.J. Harrison and Associates. Following an evaluation of the area by Archaeology South East in July 2007, an area of 696 m2 was reduced in two stages under the supervision of an archaeologist. The underlying natural chalk was encountered at a maximum height of 40.78 m OD to the south of the area of investigation falling away to 36.91 m OD to the north of the area of investigation The earliest stage of activity truncated the natural chalk and was represented by a single north-south running linear and a partial inhumation. No dating evidence was recovered from either of these features. The later stage of activity truncated the thick layer of made ground over the natural chalk. This was represented by the remains of an18th century windmill and a plinth previously uncovered during the evaluation of the area. |
