Abstract: |
Small-scale excavations were carried out at New Weir Forge during spring 2009 and spring 2010. The main purpose was to provide information that can be used to inform the future management of the site through a Conservation Management Plan, to involve local volunteers in archaeological investigative works, and to provide information for future interpretation of the site. Five areas were targeted in 2009, based in part on surface evidence and also on the results of a remarkably successful geophysical survey carried out prior to the excavation. Remains associated with the former use as an iron forge were revealed, including two areas that may have been sites of the hearths themselves. Other remains were identified as possible water-management features and storage areas. Three further areas were investigated in 2010. Remains associated with the former leat at the eastern end of the dam wall were uncovered and recorded. A section of dam wall was revealed and recorded. One of the trenches initially excavated in 2009 was expanded in order to define the iron-working area tentatively identified as part of the rolling mill. |
