Abstract:
Three archaeological test pits were excavated and two geotechnical test pits were reopened. Natural gravel and sand was overlain by a layer of late medieval or early post-medieval trampled mortar which was then overlaid by redeposited natural used to build up the 17th century garden terrace. In the central part of the site a mid-17th century garden terrace wall, constructed out of reused 16th century bricks which may have been part of the Friary, was found. The northern side of this wall was overlaid by layers of dumped material built up to form the garden terrace. At a later date the southern side of the wall was also built up with dumped material to widen the terrace. This in turn was overlaid by 19th and 20th century made ground and garden soil. Within the basement of the existing building the natural was found to be truncated by an earlier 16th or 17th century wall, which was incorporated into the foundations of the existing 18th century (or earlier) wall. A brick vault of unknown date, but predating the existing 18th century basement, was observed beneath the floorboards of another part of the basement, but not investigated further.
