Abstract: |
A programme of Strip, Map and Sample was carried out in gardens to the rear of 17 - 20 Main Street, Rutland, following a prior Desk-Based Assessment and Trial Trench Evaluation. The investigations revealed a probably track running approximately SSW to ENE, aligning with Crown Lane and the northwest corner of the adjacent churchyard to the east. The hollow containing the track appears to have been levelled in the 18th century - probably in advance of the construction of the existing cottages (Nos 17-20). The investigations also located a stone-built drain or culvert in the area of Trial Trench 1, where 15th to 16th century deposits had been recorded. There was no evidence of medieval activity in the area apart from 2 sherds of unstratified pottery dated as Saxo-Norman to early Medieval. Medieval occupation might therefore have concentrated in the area of earthworks and artefact scatters located further to the southwest on Crown Lane. |
