Abstract:
In April and May 2015 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation at the former Tottenham Hotspur training ground, Luxborough Lane, Chigwell, Essex (NGR TQ 4258 9285). The evaluation was commissioned by the Anderson Group and was undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning permission for the construction of an autistic spectrum disorder school and associated facilities, and residential dwellings. The site is situated on the eastern side of the valley of the river Roding. It is the location of the medieval manor of Luxborough, first recorded in documentary sources in 1316. The site therefore had a potential for evidence of medieval and earlier activity associated with the Luxborough Manor and its grounds, and for palaeoenvironmental evidence associated with the adjacent course of the river Roding. In the event the evaluation revealed a shallow undated ditch. The evaluation demonstrated that the site had been subject to extensive modern groundworks related to the construction of the football training facilities and probably earlier works associated with the construction of the M11 motorway.
