Abstract:
The site of the Roman fort at Templeborough was subject to a programme of archaeological works prior to its development. The fieldwork was undertaken by ARCUS, with ArcHeritage commissioned to complete the reporting and publication after the closure of ARCUS. Archaeological rescue excavation at the fort took place in 1917 during the construction of the Templeborough Steelworks. The excavator, Thomas May, identified three phases of fort building on the site with phases of abandonment in between. It was thought that the steelworks had largely destroyed the Roman fort, but the ARCUS investigations demonstrated that localised and heavily truncated remains of the fort and vicus did survive in some parts of the site. The fort remains were limited to the bases of the defensive ditches, which were much more complex and extensive than previously recorded. Aspects of the history of maintenance and recutting were identified even in their truncated state. Vicus remains were limited within the investigated areas, with better preservation further to the east, where remains were preserved in situ. Pottery identified two main phases of activity, a Flavian/Trajanic phase and a Hadrianic/Antonine phase. No evidence for May's third phase was found. The 2006-2008 fieldwork enabled a reassessment of the 1917 excavations including a comprehensive reinterpretation of the development, layout and dating of the fort.
