Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment and geophysical was undertaken for land at Retreat Farm Quarry, Grimley, Worcestershire (NGR SO 8320 5970) as part of a staged program of evaluation supported by English Heritage and the Aggregates Sustainability Levy (ALSF). The land lies within a permitted quarry of which only a small area remains for extraction. This is situated at the southern extent of a large complex of cropmark features representing multi-period activity, ranging from the Neolithic to the medieval period. Much of this complex has been removed by quarrying, including cropmarks within this particular quarry. Assessment and survey have focussed on the outstanding permitted area, which includes evidence for survival of pits, possibly indicative of unenclosed occupation or activity of prehistoric or Roman date. Although quarrying has removed much of the area and thus compromised the potential of the surviving remains, as with all surviving remnants of this cropmark complex, these have a high archaeological potential to evaluate the nature and level of preservation of the remaining features and contribute to the understanding of the character of the previously quarried areas. Evidence of medieval settlement in the vicinity was focused around the village of Grimley with associated cultivation represented by ridge and furrow in fields to the east, west and south.
