Abstract:
Under a requirement of the Prior Approval granted by Peterborough City Council for the demolition phase of works within Zone A of the wider redevelopment of the former Peterborough District Hospital site, the Heritage Network was commissioned to create an historic building record of the 'Memorial Wing' of the hospital. This represents the surviving elements of the Memorial Hospital opened in 1928, which are to be demolished, with the exception of the Administration Block on the Midland Road frontage, which is to be retained and reused as part of a new primary school. The buildings were extended and remodelled on a number of occasions in the 40 years between the opening of the hospital and the transfer of patients to the new, adjoining, District Hospital in 1968, after which they were refurbished and converted to house the Geriatric, Child Psychiatry, and Paediatric departments of the hospital. The elements of the original Memorial Hospital that survive in a recognisable form include the Administration Block, the Outpatients Block, and the three Ward Blocks to the south. All of these are essentially functional buildings that, nevertheless, include pleasing aesthetic detail in terms of their proportions and the materials used. The design included accommodation for the latest technological equipment, such as X-ray machines, as well as more holistic therapies, evidenced by the sun-rooms attached to each ward.
