Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Enterprise Managed Services, on behalf of Severn Trent Water, to undertake an archaeological strip, map and record works along part of the route of the Shrewsbury Resilience Scheme water pipeline between Atcham and Uckington, to the east of Shrewsbury. Significant archaeological remains were uncovered. A number of smaller gullies and ditches of Roman period were revealed with artefacts highly suggestive of Roman pottery and tile production in the near vicinity. A small bespoke pottery kiln was excavated. A number of ditches varying from prehistoric, Roman and medieval were uncovered. The earliest of these was probably prehistoric with a palimpsest of later Roman period ditches overlying this. The correlation of this data with the available crop mark data will add significantly to the research aims of the Wroxeter Northern Hinterland project. The available evidence is suggestive of the location of a putative Romano-Celtic temple located within a vicus (village) outside the main fortified Roman town. Six Roman period cremations, along with two plough damaged possible cremation urns, were uncovered.
