Abstract:
Areas A and B, were subject to archaeological Strip, Map and Sample excavation, whilst the remainder of the proposed route was monitored by an archaeological watching brief. A range of features were identified within Areas A and Areas B1-B5, dated to the prehistoric, Romano-British, medieval and post-medieval or modern periods. The watching brief identified a single Post-medieval ditch. Area A contained a limited number of small pits and possible postholes, one which contained a concentration of charcoal and evidence of in-situ scorching. Several of these features are dated by sherds of pottery and worked flints as later prehistoric in date. Their spatial distribution suggests limited sporadic activity, perhaps indicative of hunting etc. A large oval pit contained a single sherd of medieval pottery. Area B1 contained a Post-medieval pit; three small, intercutting quarry pits were identified within Area B2, from which sherds of pottery of prehistoric/ and Roman date were recovered; a series of undated features were revealed in Areas B3 and B4. Area B5 was situated towards the south-eastern end of the proposed scheme. The site contained several ditches, pits and gullies, bounded to the south by two large ditches, presumably forming a major land boundary. A number of the ditches appear to have formed corners, presumably of small enclosures or paddocks. Pottery of Late Iron Age and earlier Roman date, suggesting a relatively short-lived period of activity, rural in nature and probably associated with a nearby farmstead. The site also produced two prehistoric worked flints, including a bladelet.
