Abstract: |
As part of exploratory works to advise the design of an extension and improvement to access at The Priory Church of St. Peter, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the PCC to excavate a series of trial holes (TH) inside the church. The methodology for the work was agreed with the Diocesan Archaeology Adviser (DAA) as a requirement of the faculty granted for the investigation. The Priory Church of St. Peter, Dunstable, which is a Grade I listed building, is located in the historic core of Dunstable, centred at NGR TL 02139 21868. The groundwork involved the hand excavation of three small test pits on the northern and southern aisles of the church. These were designed to allow the architect to view the condition of the foundations, and structures, if any were present and of the nature of the natural geological substratum. The natural geology was observed in two of the test pits and no human remains were observed or disturbed in the course of the work. |
