Abstract: |
The archaeological watching brief was maintained during the groundworks for a new agricultural workers dwelling. The monitored groundworks comprised a limited initial ground reduction/topsoil strip followed by the excavation of foundation trenches for the new build. The monitoring identified a simple sequence of a topsoil horizon overlying two natural horizons of clayey silts and sandy silts respectively over the whole of the monitored area. In the light of the absence of any archaeological activity on this site, and following consultations with the local planning authority archaeologist, it was agreed that the archaeological monitoring of the remaining groundworks would not be required. No archaeological features, deposits, structures or finds associated with the site of a known and nearby Romano-British farmstead were found. |
