Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was retrospectively undertaken at Abbey Farm during the excavation of foundation pits for a new steel-framed agricultural shed on land within the abbey precinct of the Gilbertine priory. Unfortunatley some thirteen pits were excavated prior to informing the County Archaeologist that work had commenced even though the planning permission had specified that archaeological monitoring was required. Following the suspension of construction a scheme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken. Although the works were much compromised by this, deep well-preserved deposits were exposed incorporating stone foundations, floors, occupation deposits and destruction layers. [AIP]
