Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a commercial development identified that it lay within a part of Lincolnshire which had been an attractive settlement location from the earliest times. Many Mesolithic and Bronze Age artefacts had been recovered in the surrounding area, and evidence of Neolithic occupation had been recorded. Grantham itself had emerged as a town in the Saxon period, although some evidence of Romano-British occupation had been recorded within its confines. The proposal site fronted a sigificant medieval thoroughfare. Little archaeological work had previously been carried out in the vicinity, although a large medieval cemetery 600m to the south-east had been investigated, and two wells had been recorded immediately adjacent to the proposal site. The recovery of Saxon pottery at the cemetery site could be taken to have reinforced the historical view that the Saxon town had been large. It was concuded that the site had a moderately high archaeological potential, and that it lay in an area where medieval and possibly Saxon occupation levels could be anticipated, although it was noted that the extent of disturbance from previous developments had not been established entirely.
