Abstract:
The evaluation was undertaken on the 39ha site prior to the proposed development of a brickworks and clay extraction site. Excavations were undertaken within an area of cropmarks. These produced no dating evidence and their function remained uncertain. Typologically it remained reasonable to assume that these features were of later prehistoric or Romano-British date. A trench positioned on the projected line of a cropmark thought to be the line of a Roman Road, confirmed the location of the cropmark and its interpretation as a metalled road surface, undated by excavation, but morphologically most likely to be Roman in date. A number of features were found, sealed beneath the road. Trench 1 was located to look at the possibility of the park moat or structures associated with it. Fieldwalking identified a well-defined scatter of prehistoric struck flint that occupied the south-central part of the site. The flint scatter appeared to represent activity of two periods, the Mesolithic and the Bronze Age. [Au(abr)]
