Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation at Old Farm Road, Mancetter, on the edge of the area occupied by the Roman fortress, was able to demonstrate that the proposed development site lies on the line of the Roman defences in the north-west corner of the fortress. A sequence of two parallel ditches of 'military type', dating from the 1st century AD was found preserved beneath the floor slabs of 20th century houses. An oven type feature located outside the outer of the two ditches represents the first evidence of Roman activity outside the western boundary of the fortress. A small group of features found between the ditches included a pit of Early/Middle Bronze Age date, representing the first evidence for activity of this date in this part of Warwickshire. [Au] |
