Abstract:
The evaluation found evidence of Late Iron Age/Romano-British activity in both of the fields examined. In one area, close to Pound Green, a group of cropmarks recorded on aerial photographs was found to represent a number of small settlement enclosures with occupation throughout the Late Iron Age and Romano-British periods. In the other area a large multi-ditched enclosure, previously considered to have been a causewayed enclosure of Early Neolithic date, was shown to have been of Late Iron Age origin. It may have been the focus for settlement in this period, although further activity of the same date was located outside of the enclosure to the south-east. The enclosure appeared to have gone out of use by the end of the 2nd century AD, and later activity in the 3rd-4th centuries was located on the top of a low ridge to the east of the enclosure.
