Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a recreation ground. A small number of isolated prehistoric artefacts had been found in the surrounding area. A number of Roman kiln sites had also been recorded, and the route of a Roman road passed within 0.5km of the site. A priory had been founded, between 1134 and 1160, within 1km of the study area. The site itself had been used for the disposal of sewage during the 19th century. During the evaluation, three ditches were recorded in an area where magnetic anomalies had been identified by a geophysical survey. Two of the ditches may have related to the Victorian sewage works, but the third contained 2nd century AD pottery of a type which indicated domestic activity. A gully containing a domestic assemblage dating from the 1st century AD was also revealed, and a probable Roman kiln site which appeared to have been in operation during the 3rd century was recorded. A cobbled surface sealing Romano-British pottery was thought to have been part of a structure which acted as a drying area for pottery vessels. [AIP]
