Abstract:
A series of watching briefs were maintained during water mains improvement works within the historic core of Selby. The work produced evidence of archaeological deposits of some significance. In Micklegate the potential for waterlogged organic deposits in undisturbed areas was noted, although the extent of these was unknown. Church Hill also produced waterlogged deposits and some evidence of structural remains, although the nature of these could not be fully explored. A pit dug in Abbey Place proved the existence of at least one burial outside the existing churchyard and beyond the limits of a Cholera Burial Ground which lay in the vicinity. Taken together, the results showed a high potential for archaeological investigation in a number of streets in the historic core of the town, and provided the groundwork for targetting future archaeological work.
