Abstract:
The evaluation ahead of quarrying confirmed the archaeological interpretation based on the results of the earlier geophysical survey. Archaeological features encountered were generally well preserved, and appeared to range in date from early prehistoric (possibly Mesolithic) to post-medieval, although little artefactual material was recovered. In addition to possible evidence of prehistoric settlement activity, other occupation evidence including field boundaries, an inhumation and a possible military enclosure suggested extensive Romano-British activity, probably representing several phases, and relating to other known sites in the area.
