Abstract:
The evaluation revealed a large curvilinear ditch which appeared to correspond with a crop mark seen on aerial photographs. This ditch appears to enclose an area of higher ground in the south-east corner. The ditch yielded sherds of Roman pottery. In the trenches to the north and north-west of field, excavation revealed field systems mainly comprised of shallow ditches and gullies. These were undated in the majority of the trenches, but certain sections, particularly close to the large enclosure ditch, yielded Romano-British pottery. A number of pits were identified, one of which contained large quantities of burnt flint and metal working debris; a probable rectilinear enclosure in the north-west corner of the site and close to this put produced smelting slag and possible Saxon pottery suggesting a probable metal-working area. Within the conveyor route to the north of the lane, further gullies, possibly relating to small enclosures or field systems, were identified. [Au(abr)]
