Abstract:
The desk-based assessment identified that the site had a very low potential for deposits relating to the prehistoric and Roman periods. The development of Ipswich as a leading trading centre gave a low to moderate potential for archaeology for the early to middle Saxon period. It was not until the late medieval/ post-medieval period that there was documentary evidence for the construction of dwellings on the site (according to Ogilby and Speede's map) which was described as formerly being empty waste land suggesting that it was unoccupied during the medieval period and saw little activity, although later industrial activity could have been possible.
