Abstract:
Archaeological observations were made during groundworks for a new art gallery, at a site where an earlier evaluation had identified made ground to a depth of approximately one metre. The focus of the medieval town of Walsall was thought to have lain to the north-east, with a gradual encroachment into the study area prior to the construction of a canal in 1799. This had been followed by rapid 'unplanned' urban development. During the watching brief, no evidence of buildings pre-dating the construction of the canal was observed; deposits encountered within the site predominantly related to former 19th century structures. Cellars which related to structures of this date fronting onto Wolverhampton Street were noted in the northern part of the site. It was noted that ground conditions during recording would have made the identification of any ephemeral features difficult, so that the fact that no pre-19th century remains were observed did not preclude the possibility that they could have been located within the sudy area.
